Lighting is the second largest component of electricity use (after air conditioning) in buildings.  Using a proprietary diagnostic tool, PowerSense can accurately predict commercial lighting efficiency and electricity savings.

By integrating the appropriate combination of light refits to more efficient lighting (e.g., CFL, LED lighting), changing magnetic to electronic ballast, and installing daylight harvesting and occupancy sensor lighting controls, PowerSense delivers optimal energy efficient lighting.

Wasted Electricity Use

Staff are continually out the office in meetings or sick and there is much time where meeting rooms, storerooms, cafeterias and staircases are unused.  PowerSense solutions can lower peak load by up to 10%.  Peak load statistics show that our demand side management solutions have greatest benefit during the evening 6-7pm spike as people get home -  while almost all office lights are still on.

Electricity Bill Reduction

We save electricity and lower peak load, which in many commercial electricity bill formulas, has a multiplier effect on electricity price reduction.

Proving electricity savings to Building Managers

By way of example, some building managers think that because they have timer switches, they have the lion’s share of savings accounted for.  As most timers have lights on between 6 and 7pm, it is fair to say that timers do nothing for peak load.  Further, looking at the data, in this example below, a further 67% savings are possible AFTER timer switches.

In situations where standalone air conditioning units can also be occupancy controlled, peak load clipping can be significantly greater than 10%.

For an indicative impact on a power grid, we calculated the savings across 280 customers ranging from 30 to 4000 employees.  Over 31MW peak clipping and savings of over 340,000MWh were possible annually.

Our diagnostic data coupled with utility bills, physical building audits and meter data, gives an accurate prediction on electricity savings.

Power Generators Embrace Demand Side Management

Reduced peak load means lower capex requirements for power generators and extending the time line to base load shortages.

Increasingly common practice around the world, power companies subsidise capex in problem parts of the network and/or are moving downstream in the value chain to engage the customers in energy solutions.

Power companies as well positioned and already capable to provide this type of expertise.  With existing billing relationships and knowledge of who the biggest electricity users are (and their utilization profiles), their position in the value chain is hard to match.

PowerSense is well positioned to license the complete demand side management solution to power companies already in, or moving into the customer solutions domain.
